David Tweedale started in the industry in Huddersfield by delivering the best locally grown potatoes to Fish and Chip shops across the town.

In 1972 David decided to stop supplying and start frying. He used his experience to source the best local potatoes for the perfect chips and the freshest fish caught from the docks of Hull to open the first Elite with his wife Freda.

At aged 15, son Adrian followed in their footsteps and stepped behind the frying range, a second Elite takeaway soon followed.

In 1988 their drive to offer customers the best possible fish and chips steered them south to Lincolnshire. This is where the first Elite Fish and Chip Company restaurant and takeaway opened in Ruskington and soon won the National Fish and Chip of the Year Award in 1992.

Three years later Elite Tritton Road was opened in Lincoln, offering seating for over 100 guests and the same great takeaway. This continues to be our busiest branch.

In 2012, third generation frier Rachel kept the family business growing further by opening Elite’s third restaurant and takeaway in the market town of Sleaford. This is where Rachel won Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year 2015.

In 2019, the family business grew further with the opening of Elite on the Bail, in the historic Bailgate area of the City of Lincoln, offering a full Gluten Free menu and varying seafood specials. Opening just before the Covid-19 pandemic closed restaurants, we are proud the restaurant stood strong and continues to thrive. Elite on the Bail takeaway was named in the National Top 20 Takeaways on the Year 2025 by the National Federation of Fish Friers.

Over 40 years later, we are proud to still be family ran and to be using the same traditional homemade batter from Elite’s founding takeaway and will continue to do so for years to come.
